“…For years [by the 1920’s] foreign-language records had contained occasional examples of rural vernacular music, but not until record companies discovered the music of souther rural blacks and whites was there extensive recording of the folk music of foreign-born Americans. It marked a radical departure from both the music available from abroad and earlier record-company offerings. By the late twenties foreign-language record catalogs had become heavily augmented by fiddlers, bagpipers, rough voiced singers, plain-voiced choirs, village “orchestras”, and other representatives of a bevy of authentic folk styles that were being documented sparsely, if at all, in the Old World. many of these records are priceless documents of genres and traditions virtually extinct today. The best of these recordings represent not only styles that flourished at the time of recording but even styles that preceded those by decades or centuries.” (Dick Spotswood, from the liner notes)

Precious gems in 78rpms. Raw folk revelations from many quarters of the “Old World”. Illuminating notes & essays from Dick Spotswood & Oscar Handlin. 320 vinyl rip by yours truly.

  3. NOWHERE (2009) / central scene / for Pina from Dimitris Papaioannou on Vimeo.

NOWHERE was created by DIMITRIS PAPAIOANNOU in 2009 to inaugurate the renovated Main Stage of the Greek National Theatre in Athens.

This central scene is dedicated to the memory of PINA BAUSCH.

NOWHERE explores the nature of the theatrical stage itself, a spatial mechanism continually transformed and redefined by the human presence to denote any place, and yet designed to be a non-place. 26 performers measure and mark out the space using their bodies, pitting themselves against its dimensions and technical capabilities in a site-specific performance that can be presented nowhere else.

  8. The Story of the wolf Navarre from Andrea Dalpian on Vimeo.

Since 1989, the Monte Adone Centre for Conservation and Research of Exotic and Wild Fauna (NPO - Voluntary Association) rescues, cures and rehabilitates the injured indigenous wildlife animals found on the territory of Bologna province (Emilia Romagna Region, Italy) in order to reintroduce them in nature. Moreover the Monte Adone Center welcomes the exotic animal species sequestered because of their illegal trading, detention and mistreatment (centrotutelafauna.org).

On January 9, 2012 the wolf Navarre was recovered from the icy waters of a river in very dramatic conditions: undernourished, with a paralysis of the hind limbs and with 35 lead pellets in his body.
After several diagnostic tests, two weeks of intensive care in the infirmary, monitored 24 hours 24, Navarre started to walk. He was transferred to another enclosure of the Centre, suitable for his rehabilitation, which requires a gradual recovery of motor function without subjecting him to excessive physical effort. Thanks to a video camera placed in the enclosure Navarre is monitored day and night without being disturbed.
It’s still a long way, various diseases have weakened him a lot, but Navarre, thanks to his incredible will to live and care he received, started to walk improving gradually and giving good signs of recovery.

For those interested in the full version of his story: centrotutelafauna.org/storia-navarre.html

The images are taken from the documentary series Animals Chronicles produced by Andrea Dalpian POPCult.
